Termites and Southern California

The weather in Southern California draws many people to settle here, but it’s that same weather that attracts termites to the area as well. No matter how vigilant homeowners are, termites are incredibly talented as home invaders, making  termite control  an ever-constant battle.

The Three Termite Species of Southern California

Drywood termites are the most prevalent termite in Southern California, especially in beach communities. They don’t need the moisture of the soil to live and often live in the walls or furniture of your home.

Subterranean termites come into homes where there is contact with soil. They live in the moist soil around your home and make tunnels called “mud tubes” on the side of concrete foundations in order to access the wood of your home without exposing themselves to sunlight. Far more destructive than drywood termites, subterranean termites require quick action on the part of homeowners upon seeing any mud tubes.

Formosan termites are a subspecies of the subterranean termite and bear the nickname “super-termites” because of how destructive they are. They create very large colonies that could contain millions of termites consuming as much as 13 ounces of wood each day. At that rate, serious damage could be done in as little as three months to a home.

Combating Termites

Because these termites are so widespread in Southern California, it is essential to maintain an effective pest control program to protect your home. While many states in the country have specific termite seasons, the weather here makes termite season a year-round threat.

Homeowners should be on the lookout for:

  • Mud tubes on the outside of your home
  • Sagging floors or ceilings
  • Termite excrement that looks a lot like coffee grounds
  • Piles of wings discarded after termites swarm to establish a new colony

The most important tactic to adhere to is to  have your home inspected  once a year for termites.  Ecola , with over 60 years of experience, provides free termite inspections. Considered to be  alternative termite control  specialists, Ecola can often use a combination of treatment techniques that are both effective and greener for families and the environment.
